Counselors who help Southwest Floridians facing foreclosure say they’re seeing a new wave of desperate homeowners with a new set of problems causing their financial woes.

The city of Chicago is offering homeowners access to free legal assistance, mortgage counselors and other help to reduce their risk of foreclosure.

As Georgia’s foreclosure rate remains among the highest in the country, mortgage counselors say the toughest challenge isn’t the onslaught of new clients — it’s reaching out to those at risk of losing their homes.

The city’s comptroller is trying to make sure New Yorkers don’t lose their homes to foreclosure. William Thompson held a “Save Our Homes” clinic Saturday at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. He said this is the first of many foreclosure clinics that will be held throughout the five boroughs this summer.

Federal and state officials are cracking down on foreclosure-rescue scams, the Obama administration said yesterday as it pledged to take on a growing industry that’s targeting borrowers who are trying to save their homes.
